Monitoring Tools

Enterprise Monitoring is dependent on the usage of multiple monitoring solutions to provide coverage of both legacy and future technologies.  Yale ITS has selected, Dynatrace, as the flagship monitoring solution to integrate other existing and future gap monitoring solutions.

Other monitoring solutions currently utilized at Yale ITS are listed in the table below along with their lifecycle status

Standards

Steps are underway to migrate existing tools over to Dynatrace.   The following standards should be adhered to for application and system owners.

  • New infrastructure, servers, or other hardware should always leverage the use of Dynatrace as the monitoring solution.
  • Changes, movements or even upgrades of hardware from one location to another (i.e. on-prem to cloud, cloud to cloud, etc) may warrant a time in which migrating from non-standard tool (i.e. Ops View) to Dynatrace can be possible.
  • Infrastructure or Applications deemed incompatible with Dynatrace will be handled individually by the Enterprise Monitoring team. Secondary, solutions such as Telegraf and SCOM are available to fill the gap while still adhering to Enterprise Monitoring best practices.

Licensing

Dynatrace licensing is finite and thus carefully distributed and monitored by the Enterprise Monitoring team.  The following strategy determines the order and priority of Dynatrace provisioning so that it is uniformly applied across ITS.

Full Stack vs Infrastructure Only

The Dynatrace OneAgent can operate in two different modes: Full-Stack or Infrastructure Only.

  • Host Units, which represents the Dynatrace licensing model, are based on the amount of RAM a monitored server has.
  • Infrastructure mode consumes far fewer host units than full-stack mode.

The following diagram provides an overview of the full stack along with multiple example technologies and where they fall within the monitoring stack.
